continue to do:中断后的恢复
continue to do则表示动作的中断后的恢复,即某个动作先因客观原因如另一件事的发生暂停,之后再重新开始。此时,to do所代表的动作与之前的状态之间存在明显的“中断-重启”逻辑。
例如:
- She stopped to answer the phone, then continued to write the email.她停下来接电话,之后继续写邮件。
- After finishing his meal, he continued to read the novel.吃饭后,他继续读小说。
这里的“write the email”和“read the novel”都不是连贯的动作——前者被“接电话”打断,后者因“吃饭”暂停,因此用to do形式表示中断后的恢复。
语境中的核心差异
从本质上看,两者的区别在于动作是否存在“时间断点”:
- 当描述“不加停顿的持续状态”时,用continue doing;
- 当描述“先停后做的重启状态”时,用continue to do。
再看一组对比:
- She continued singing while cooking.她边做饭边唱歌,两个动作同时持续,唱歌未中断——doing
- She finished cooking, then continued to sing.她做饭后,继续唱歌,唱歌因做饭暂停过——to do 通过动作的“中断与否”,就能清晰区分continue to do和continue doing的用法。
