Thanksgiving, a cherished holiday in the United States, traces its roots to a pivotal event in the early 17th century. In 1620, a group of English Separatists, later known as the Pilgrims, fled religious persecution and sailed to North America aboard the *Mayflower*. After a treacherous 66-day journey, they landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in December, facing a harsh winter with little food and shelter. By spring, nearly half of the 102 passengers had perished from disease and starvation.
Their fortunes began to turn when an English-speaking Wampanoag Native American named Squanto approached them. Squanto, who had been kidnapped and enslaved in Europe before returning home, taught the Pilgrims essential survival skills: how to plant corn using fish as fertilizer, hunt game, and navigate the local terrain. With his guidance, the Pilgrims harvested a bountiful crop in the autumn of 1621.
To celebrate their first successful harvest, Governor William Bradford organized a three-day feast and invited the Wampanoag chief Massasoit and 90 of his people. The gathering featured venison, wild turkeys, fish, corn, and pumpkins—foods that would later become iconic symbols of Thanksgiving. This event, often called the \"First Thanksgiving,\" was a gesture of gratitude for the Native Americans’ help and the blessings of the harvest.
While this 1621 feast laid the foundation, Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until centuries later. President George Washington proclaimed a day of thanks in 1789, but it remained an irregular observance. It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor and author, who campaigned tirelessly for over 30 years to make Thanksgiving a national tradition. Her efforts succeeded in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November a national day of \"Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.\"
Over time, the holiday evolved, blending Pilgrim traditions with Native American influences and broader American customs.
